Multi-talented Canadian icon

I always hated those people at school who were good at everything. I was only ever good at two things; maths, which I hated, and English, which I loved. Which is why I write a blog instead of sitting around doing equations!
There is one Canadian icon who is the very definition of multi-talent. Not only is he a best selling author, a man who has defined an entire generation and sparked cultural movements, but he’s also an amazing artist. I should hate Douglas Coupland, but instead I’m one of his biggest fans.
Like most people, I got to know his writing first, but have now become a big fan of his art. He describes himself as an amateur dabbler, but if that’s the case then some of his sculptures are far better than he thinks! He creates really thought-provoking art, not necessarily beautiful, and certainly nothing like the saccharine sweet Lladro figurines my Mum used to collect.
I haven’t yet been lucky enough to see any of his work “in the flesh” but I’m hoping that there will be some pieces at an upcoming exhibition of new Canadian art – even though he’s been creating for decades, he’s still considered a newbie on the art scene!
My favourite is the massive “Digital Orca” that he created. It looks like it could have been made out of Lego, but is actually made from bigger blocks and now adorns the Vancouver conference centre. A good reason to go west if ever you needed one! Canadian cities are now joining Vancouver in clamouring for a Coupland to decorate their city, with Toronto recently unveiling a sculpture marking the War of 1812 on the site of a historic fort. More subtle than his giant Orca, this work features two toy soldiers, one defeated and one victorious.
